Pitch Shots Onto Green Whilst Keeping Nerves Under Control

Can you see what’s behind me?

We’ve got the green, we’ve got the flag and our ball is just there.

What we want to do is to get the ball onto the green without losing the plot. You know how you can get really nervous when you are approaching the green with your pitch shots and you’re frightened of making a mistake?

Today I’m going to show you how to overcome that.

What we want to do here is to hit the ball onto the green without getting nervous. I’m going to share a secret with you; we all get nervous no matter what level of golf we play. We want to make sure we get the ball as close to the hole as we can. The difference between a good player and somebody that constantly makes errors is purely by learning to control their nerves.

What I’m going to show you today is a way in which you can control your nerves, if you haven’t got control of your nerves, guess what?

You’re going to make a mistake anyway. It doesn’t matter that you even have a nice short shot, we’re probably about twenty metres from the flag here, but it won’t matter that you’ve got a short shot, because you’re going to muck it up anyway.

You know why you’re going to muck it up? Because you will be so worried about making a mistake; guess what happens? That’s right, you will make a mistake and I want to make sure that we can work on getting rid of the mistake, especially as we are approaching the green. These pitch shots should be easier to play than your full swing. Yet; a lot of people struggle with them. We’re not going to let that happen.

Standing in front of the green, we see the ball, we see the green, we see the flag. What should we be focusing on, the flag, the green, or the ball?

We’ve got to be focusing on the ball!

What we need to make sure we are doing here is basically so obvious, you have to learn to trust yourself. Learn to trust your swing, learn to trust your ability.

If you do struggle at these approach shots, these pitch shots into the green the I suggest you have lessons on them and get it right. This is what makes or breaks you. If you are playing these pitch shots in and you keep making mistakes, it costs you extra shots. We don’t want extra shots to keep happening because what happens to the handicap? It blows out.

I want you to learn to start trusting you and to start trusting your decisions. Let go of what might happen on the green, if you are worried about what will happen, it will happen and you’re going to make a mistake anyway.

The thing I want you to be able to do here is to do a practice swing, and then when you come to stand over the ball all I want you to say to yourself is to trust your swing.

Get set, trust your swing and then play the shot. The ball will go wherever it goes.

If you start focusing on hoping to not make a mistake, please don’t make a mistake, I hope I get it down there, what’s going to happen? You are going to make a mistake. You’re going to have an extra shot or two shots and then start getting cranky with yourself and then when you walk to the next hole all you can think about is making that last mistake. I shouldn’t, shouldn’t, shouldn’t. I should all over myself (that’s what they say, isn’t it?)

You move over to the next hole and all you are thinking of is what you should have done on the last hole. It’s been and gone!

I want you to focus in this moment, play the best shot that you can to your ability and like I said if it’s not that good technically, get lessons on it. That’s what I thoroughly recommend.

    Hi Tiff
After reading your tip yesterday it made me think seriously about where my golf was going – handicap gone up so much in a short time – not enjoying it and playing badly. Had decided to give it up ! However a friend pointed out that I had started playing so negatively and after reading your tip for pitching – I thought “that’s my whole game’!!!
I then read through all of your tips, kept in a special folder, and went out today for a game. What a difference – I felt so positive and played better than I have for months. Thank you so much Tiff for turning my game around – I’m now looking forward to playing regularly!!! Lena

      Hi Lena

Wow what a powerful story you have just shared with me. I am so excited that you have not given up on golf. You know it does test you, golf will always test you but it is how you respond to it. And it sounds as though you are responding better to it.

Some days will be mentally challenging than others but golf is really an analogy of life. Not every day is easy, some days are challenges, some days are a breeze… but everything you do to each day will make you stronger for the next challenge.

Keep going and if you ever feel like that again… make sure you call me! We can talk about it!

      Tiff 🙂

    Thank you Tiff.
When you asked what you be focusing on I answered wrongly by saying the flag, of course it should be the ball. Mainly when at the back of a bunker onto the green I duff my shot. Not because I’m scared (as I love those shots) but being to cute especially when the pin is close.

      Hi Jill

Never think you are wrong in your answer. It is just showing where your focus is. Always focus on the shot you need to play.

      Tiff 🙂
