This is Part 6 of How To Improve Your Golf on the Golf Course.
How good are you around the green?
It is your ability to recover from around the green, this is where it makes all the difference.
This will be based on your technique initially. How good is your technique for putting, chipping, pitching and bunker shots? Are you shots in these areas consistent?
The first thing you would need to do is the refine your technique so that your shots in your short game are more consistent to achieve better results.
Other areas you can then refine is your ability to read the lies, your judgement, your touch and the amount of time you practice.
If you have a really good short game you can definitely make up a lot of deficiences that may occur in your long game, that is your full golf swing.
Most high handicappers don’t have a good short game and that is why their handicap is higher than some. But this can be rectified if you get out on that practice chipping green, putting green and bunker area to really improve that part of your game.
A good short game should include competence in chipping, pitching, sand shots and flop shots. As mentioned above if you are not competent then you will have to spend time practicing this part of the game because if you do…. it will make all the difference in you becoming a better scorer on the golf course.
The exciting thing is that with some diligence any player can gain competence in the short game, because it allows for idiosyncrasies that the full golf swing won’t allow, due to the athletic moves that produce club head speed. What I am trying to say is that you need more touch & feel than speed.
Now what are you going to do?
Take that first step and start spending more time on your short game as this is where the scoring will make the difference, plus it is alot of fun developing touch and feel around the green.
However if you are really struggling with your swing and are inconsistent, most likely you have irregular shots then it would be best to take lessons from a teaching professional.
