#97 Web TV: Most Important Element To Improve Your Golf Swing

Do you know what is one of the most important elements to improve your golf swing?

I would consider it one of the most important elements in your golf swing and if you don’t have this, then it is what you need to work on.

I just mentioned before that the most important thing in a golf swing is not your grip.  Yes, your grip is incredibly important and I will say that you need to have the right grip but that’s not what I am going to talk about today.

I am going to talk to you today about making sure that you are staying down through your shot in your golf swing.  That is the most important thing.  I’m going to say it again; the most important thing is for you to stay down in your swing at contact.

You cannot come up and see where the ball has gone.  You cannot lift up to watch it go.  Got it?

This is what we are going to do.  The reason I’m sharing this with you is because I see a lot of people do this. When they go to hit a ball and they get set and they’ve got their target and everything ready to go, they’ll hit and then come up to see where the ball has gone.

What did I just say the most important thing in your swing is. “Staying down through the shot.”  It’s not about just having your head down.  There is a lot more to it than just keeping the head down.  But, what I want you to be aware of is that your body needs to stay down through the ball.  Which means that your right shoulder has to stay down through the shot.  That’s all I’m going to tell you because I don’t want to give you too much information.

The other thing I want you to make sure you are doing is maintaining your contact through the ball as long as possible.  (refer to video above).

When you come down to make contact with the ball.  So when you go up in your swing and come down to make contact with the ball, you want to make sure that your right shoulder stays low and that you are staying down through the shot, you’re not popping up to see what has actually happened.

That is your tip from Tiff for today.

Hi Tiff, amongst a lot of other things, this is something I really need to work on. I have to stop looking up too soon. Will try and practice this this week.

Thanks Tiff. I love your tips. I don’t reply very often but I must say my putting has improved from your recent tips. With this one I notice there is no follow through with that swing you just demonstrated. Is that just the drill? It just looked like you were stopping on it to me.

    • Tiffany Mika February 3, 2016 at 3:00 pm #

      Hi Kerrie

Thanks and nice to hear from you. It gives me great pleasure when I get feedback that people are improving from my tips. So that’s awesome and well done that your putting has improved.

Yes there is no follow through on this one. It is just a drill to get you to really focus on staying down through the shot. And yes I was stopping because the focus is to stay down not to pop up. Let the ball work off the club face.

      Tiff 🙂

Right Tiff. Very, very important to stay down and through the shot and with your knees and legs flexed, not rigid, with your hips and body moving toward the target. Byron Nelson said it the same way and how important is it also to lead with the left side in control if you are right handed. I like the shoulder down and low at impact. Very good point to remember and practice. Take care and thanks again. -Dave

    • Tiffany Mika February 3, 2016 at 3:04 pm #

      Hey there Dave

That’s exactly right. Of course you should lead with the left side… but remember you only do one thing at a time. Work on one area at a time. Get that right first. But great point and you are spot on.

      Tiff 🙂
