#52 Web TV: How to Chip With Consistency & Balance

This week’s tip I am showing you how to chip with better consistency and balance.

When golfers chip they tend to get inconsistent results purely from lack of follow through and yes even poor balance.

I am sure you haven’t considered that your balance could also affect your chips shots, but yes they can.

Golf is such a precise game that a slight movement the wrong way can affect the shot and the result of the ball.

So what we are going to do here is to test your balance and also how you actually chip the ball. You need to get feedback from what you are doing so that you know and you are aware of how you chip.

What I want you to do is to set yourself up on the fringe of the green (well really you can do this anywhere), with approximately 10 balls.

Now you set yourself up for your chipping set up position and line the ball up with your left foot…if you are a left hand golfer line the ball up with your right foot.

Stand on your left foot only then perform your chipping stroke.

What I want you to check are two things once you have performed your chip shot;

  1. Could you maintain balance on your left foot?
  2. What was your chipping stroke like? – did you follow through with your chip shot or did you flick your wrists?

Now if you could maintain your balance, well done!

How was the result of your actual chip shot…not the result of the ball?

It is really important to be aware whether you are flicking your wrists or keeping your wrists straight.

The answer I wanted to hear from you is that your wrists stayed straight with the chip shot and you kept your balance.

If you are not sure how to keep your arms in position when you play your chip shot, it is time to view this video above and see what you need to do. Take notes and actually watch how the chip shot is actually performed.

And by the way, work on the balance…it is essential!

Enjoy the practice.

    Hi Tiff,
A week ago my handicap has come down to 24, which was my FY13 target. I was so happy!

I was 28 at the beginning of the year and had been struggling with my swing, long game and short!

I took a few private lessons (approx 8) with you for all parts of my game. With a few advices in my head each time I approach a swing, they have gradually become good!

I have also supplement the lessons by reviewing the “Get Into the Swing” Program and following the exercise at home. My putting has improved tremendously. My current putting average is about 2.6!

You are the best golf teacher I ever have and believe me, I had a lot of lessons in the past! You have the ability to read the weakness of my swing. The changes that you helped me made were subtle, but a big difference with the results!

Not only have you improved my game physically, but the mental aspect of the game! The pre-shot preparation that you taught me, I do that every time before I tee off or approach a shot!

I am setting a new target and I am confident that with you “beneath my wings”, I will be able to reach it according to plan!

Thanks Tiff! You are the best!

      Hi Carrie,

Wow and thank you so much for the kind feedback. I am so chuffed! At the beginning of the year your goal was to achieve the goal of 24 handicap..which when we started working on your game I knew not that you believed it…that you were very capable of getting your handicap down to 24 easily. It was you just had to have the faith that you could! You were just a little unsure of your abilities.

SO when we started yes it was 28 handicap…but I had to rebuild your swing into a consistent and more reliable swing. I know you found it frustrating at the time but you understood the importance of why I took you down that path of rebuilding your swing. You stuck with it and worked on it…which I admire 🙂

I know they were only slight modifications but they were essential in getting the swing to the point that you can rely on it and trust it!

Your short game we only needed to make a few changes as you had some good fundamentals but there were a few areas that needed improvement. And now look at you!

Carrie I believe now you have begun to trust yourself as well. This is a huge mental battle I see with other golfers, they just don’t trust themselves.

You should be proud of your efforts Carrie as you have done this whilst working full time and an extremely busy schedule.

      Tiff 🙂
